TOBIAS HOFFMANN QUINTET

TOBIAS HOFFMANN QUINTET

Regardless of its traditional line-up, the quintet of Vienna-based saxophonist, composer and arranger Tobias Hoffmann is dedicated to a modern and contemporary band sound, which is significantly influenced and created by the compositions and arrangements that Tobias Hoffmann wrote particularly for this band.

Inspired by musicians such as Alex Sipiagin, Chris Potter and Dave Holland to name just a few, the band plays challenging and ambitious music, which never sounds academic or intellectual and is always related to the jazz tradition. Expressive melodies, complicated rhythms, rich harmonies and complex structures of songs unfold into a manifold and individual band sound. The diversified compositions and arrangements serve as a basis and starting-point for the virtuoso and energetic solos of the band members and leave lots of space and freedom to fully embellish the individual personalities of the musicians.

With the fellow musicians Simon Plötzeneder (trumpet), Philipp Nykrin (piano), Andreas Waelti (bass) and Michael Prowaznik (drums) the band features highly prolific musicians of the Viennese jazz scene, who have been playing together in various settings and bands, but manage to bring the music to life and shape the band with their personalities and various musical backgrounds.
