New terrific CD “Lilac Orchestra” out now!!!
The Slovenian composer and singer Jan Lovšin recently released his new CD Lilac Orchestra. I had the honor and pleasure of playing clarinet and saxophone on the recording. The music was recorded in February 2022 in Graz and was now released on the Swiss label Unit Records.

The Lilac Orchestra project is a large ensemble based in Vienna/Graz and the passion of Jan Lovšin. It’s not what you would call a “high-concept” idea in movie jargon, and it’s hard to say what the “premise” of the project would be that would make it a good business pitch without going into detail. It’s a fusion of different interests and a reflection of the modern age.
Through the experimental approach to the composition, the voice as an instrument and the orchestration with a large ensemble, Jan Lovšin’s personal view of reality is presented in a fresh way.
The orchestra is a non-traditional big band consisting of a fixed woodwind section and an extended brass section that opens up the dynamic range and a sound world that is darker by nature.
The music is a complex combination of the intellectual and emotional spirit. It is influenced by a variety of different genres (jazz, classical, musical theater, pop,…). The subject matter focuses on often subtle everyday themes of comfortable European life and explores its characteristics and limitations.
