Great news: finalist in the “Scrivere in Jazz Composition” Competition

I am so proud to be among the finalists of this years edition of the “Scrivere in Jazz 2022” composition competition.
The Orchestra Jazz della Sardegna is organizing this competition every two years. I am so proud, that they chose my composition “Renegade”, which will be on my new recording of the Tobias Hoffmann Jazz Orchestra as well, to be among the final compositions.

The final concerts will be at the 8th and 9th of September, 2022 in Sassari!

Official information from the competition

There are nine finalist compositions of the International Composition and Arrangement Competition for Jazz Orchestra “ Scrivere in Jazz ”.

The novelty of this edition, in addition to the themes related to the traditional Sardinian song which is the ” Tasgia ” and the arrangements on pieces by the composer Gianluigi Trovesi , is the original compositions section dedicated exclusively to female students and students enrolled in Italian and foreign conservatories whose participation it was amazing.

“Writing in Jazz” was born in 1991 to allow composers of any artistic origin and geographical origin to measure themselves with jazz and to deal with the ethnic music of Sardinia through the composition of songs and arrangements written for the Jazz Orchestra of Sardinia .

The seventeenth edition of the competition, organized with the patronage and contribution of the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Sassari, the Region of Sardinia, the Ministry of Culture and the Foundation of Sardinia, and in collaboration with the L. Canepa Conservatory of Sassari, highlights the substantial number and the international success of previous editions. In fact, several dozen compositions have participated, elaborated by musicians who come from Australia , Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Holland, Poland, United Kingdom, United States, Spain, Hungary.

The selection commission made up of musicians-experts among the most representative of the world of Big Bands was very nourished and subjected the dozens of compositions and arrangements to a careful analysis: Duccio Bertini, Gabriele Comeglio, Michele Corcella, Mario Corvini, Riccardo Fassi, Corrado Guarino , Pino Jodice, Mario Raja, Marco Tiso .

Three compositions admitted to the finals in section A , dedicated to the elaboration of compositions based on the “Tasgia” : “Bathsheba” by the Apulian from Lecce Gabriele Di Franco , “Bonorva” by the Tuscan from Grosseto Leonardo Prunetti and “TB” by the Molise from Campobasso Nicola Course .

There are also three free-themed compositions in section B that enter the final phase: “Renegade” by the Austrian from Graz Tobias Hoffmann , student at Kunstuniversität in Graz, “Sam” by the Roman Laura Giulia Veltri , student of the Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium in Aarhus (Denmark) , “Seeds” by Francesco Spinazza di Spoletostudente at the “G. Verdi ”in Milan.

The three finalists of section C , dedicated to the arrangements of songs by Gianluigi Trovesi: the Hungarian from Pecs Daniel Hofecker with “Dance For a Fat Arlecchino”, the Apulian from Gravina in Puglia (BA) Gerardo Pepe with “Gargantella” and the Marches di Corinaldo (AN) Diego Donati with Siparietto .

After the previous edition of 2020 which saw the competition take place in streaming, Scrivere in Jazz is back live. 
On 8 and 9 September at 9 pm on the stage of the P. Sassu Hall of the L. Canepa Conservatory of Sassari we will attend the final evenings with the performance of the Jazz Orchestra of Sardinia . 
Thursday 8 , with free admission, the Orchestra will perform the nine finalist compositions under the direction of Gavino Mele 
Friday 9 (admission 10 euros), in the first part the saxophonist and clarinetist Gianluigi Trovesi will take the stage together with OJS conducted by Corrado Guarinofor a set entirely dedicated to his compositions while in the second part the winners, one per category, of the seventeenth edition of the international competition will be decreed.

“Writing in Jazz” is organized by the Blue Note Orchestra Association with the patronage and contribution of the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Sassari, the Region of Sardinia, the Ministry of Culture and the Foundation of Sardinia and in collaboration with the L. Canepa Conservatory of Sassari.
